WAR MEMORIAL, HARVEY SQUARE, LOCHWINNOCH
This morning, Tuesday 9th October, Renfrewshire Council removed three cherry trees from around the War Memorial. This action by Renfrewshire Council was done WITHOUT prior consultation with Lochwinnoch Community Council or with the wider community of Lochwinnoch itself. It was expected that Renfrewshire Council would carry out a full, community-wide consultation on any works intended for the War Memorial. Clearly, this consultation did not take place and the three cherry trees were cut down this morning, without prior notice to Lochwinnoch Community Council.
This afternoon, Tuesday 9th October at 12.33, AFTER THE TREES HAD BEEN CUT DOWN AND IN RESPONSE TO NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS AND MESSAGES FROM THE PUBLIC,
Renfrewshire Council issued the following email, which reads -

Subject: Lochwinnoch - Required Works
Dear Ward Councillors and Community Council
Lochwinnoch War Memorial
Recently we have received a number of concerns (raised by the public and elected member) into the area around Harvey Square at the Lochwinnoch War Memorial. The issues raised and and actions required are summarised as follows:
Issues & Actions
The tree at the rear of the war memorial has been damaged on a number of occasions by vehicles. The tree on the front right, looking from the church to the war memorial is diseased and the root plate protruding. We have reviewed options and consulted colleagues in the Planning section and the three trees in the centre of the square will be removed, stumps ground with the area areas affecting being re-turfed to ensure the area is reinstated prior to the 100 Armistice event next month. All other trees along both sides of the squares will remain.
The two shrub beds at the front are filled with shrubs/plants. Many of these suffered during last years severe weather and many have died back. These have not recovered despite the warmer weather over the summer. These beds will be removed. We have spoken with the Lochwinnoch Gardening Group (Morag Thow), who are willing to maintain two small floral beds at this location and we will work with them over the winter to create these for the Community Group to maintain. We will meet the local Community Council Executive to discuss any further issues at the square.
I trust this advance notice explains the issues and is helpful.
